The little car with a big personality has been turning heads and widening smiles since its very creation in 1959 by Alec Issigonis. Originally powered with an 850cc 34bhp engine, the car soon became an icon of British Cool. The company went from strength to strength, peaking (in racing terms) between 1964 – 1967 when the Cooper S achieved superstar status by winning the Monte Carlo Rally outright for 4 years running (although the Minis were disqualified from the 1966 rally for having faulty headlamps!). Through the seventies the company had a slightly more difficult time with the Cooper series ending and the Metro(!) taking over. However, rejuvenation came in 2001 with the launch of the new look Mini under the BMW marque and from there the car has continued to shine.

Considering the car’s size and weight its top speed of 138mph is fairly impressive, especially when you consider it can comfortably carry four adults and a load of luggage (it’s not as "mini" as the original!). The Mini Cooper S range is surprisingly quick out of the blocks too. The weight and size of the car ensures excellent manoeuvrability and handling both in the city and on the motorway. From its early, rather cramped roots, the new Mini gives enough room for the taller driver and delivers safety standards that really are first class. The Cooper S is not a car to be ignored and continues the emblem’s long heritage of style and cool. In the past some have claimed that all modern BMWs look alike… lies I tell you! The Mini may have all the Bavarian know-how of the BMW marque but it maintains its distinctive style and heritage. German engineering it may be, but British icon it will always remain
